Donald Trump’s tribute to former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Sunday at age 100, has ignited a firestorm of criticism among his own supporters. While Trump’s recent remarks praised Carter’s contributions during a challenging presidency, they stand in stark contrast to his earlier comments mocking the late leader’s legacy. The shift has sparked outrage among MAGA loyalists and reignited discussions about Trump’s rhetoric and consistency.
Trump’s Mixed Messages on Carter
During his campaign trail, Trump frequently criticized Carter’s presidency, often using him as a point of comparison to President Joe Biden, whom Trump has labeled the “worst U.S. president in history.” At an October rally, Trump remarked that Carter must be “the happiest man” alive because Biden’s tenure made Carter’s presidency appear “brilliant.”
However, following Carter’s death, Trump posted a markedly different message on Truth Social. “The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country, and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans,” Trump wrote. He added that the nation owed Carter “a debt of gratitude” and urged Americans to pray for the Carter family during this difficult time.
MAGA Supporters React with Outrage
Trump’s apparent change in tone toward Carter did not sit well with many of his supporters. On Truth Social, conservative artist @TheodoreWinters criticized the tribute, writing, “Lol, I know you’re being nice, but you’re tripping. Carter was a terrible president and hurt America with disastrous policies.”
Similarly, @John55, a self-identified “America First” veteran, condemned Carter for his controversial decision to pardon Vietnam draft dodgers. “Carter’s pardons forced other men to serve in their place, some of whom never came home,” he wrote.
Others expressed confusion over Trump’s inconsistency. “Trump said Carter was one of the worst presidents. Now he’s praising him? Make it make sense,” posted @PatriotRealist. Meanwhile, @TrueConservative82 tweeted, “Trump’s tribute feels insincere. He used Carter as a punching bag for years. Why the sudden change?”
Not all reactions were critical. User @HistoryBuff4Life offered a balanced view, stating, “Carter was far from perfect, but his humanitarian legacy deserves respect. Trump’s tribute reflects that reality.” Another supporter, @MAGA_Faithful, defended Trump’s statement, saying, “Showing respect for a former president in death doesn’t erase criticism of his policies.”

Carter, who died peacefully at home in Plains, Georgia, was known as much for his post-presidency humanitarian efforts as his one-term presidency. His tenure, from 1977 to 1981, faced significant challenges, including economic crises and the Iran hostage situation. Yet his achievements, such as the Camp David Accords, have solidified his place in history.
Public observances for Carter will be held in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a state funeral on January 9. President Joe Biden, fulfilling Carter’s request, will deliver the eulogy.
