Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has demanded stronger international sanctions against Russia and its allies following a devastating overnight drone strike on Kyiv that killed three people and injured 31 others, including six children. The large-scale attack, one of the most destructive in recent weeks, left two high-rise apartment buildings heavily damaged.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed on Telegram that seven of the injured, including two children, were hospitalized. The strike caused debris from downed Russian drones to crash into a nine-story apartment complex in the Desnianskyi district, igniting a fire that consumed multiple floors. Ukraine’s state emergency service reported that 13 residents were rescued from the upper levels of the building.
Zelenskiy condemned the attack, stating that “every Russian strike is an attempt to inflict as much damage as possible on ordinary life.” He called for “additional tariff and sanctions restrictions” to further isolate Russia and any nations aiding its military operations.
Ukraine’s air defense forces reported that Russia launched 101 drones overnight, with 90 successfully intercepted. Air raid sirens sounded across Kyiv and surrounding regions for more than 90 minutes before being lifted shortly after midnight GMT.
According to Zelenskiy, Russia has used nearly 1,200 attack drones, over 1,360 guided aerial bombs, and more than 50 types of missiles against Ukraine in the past week alone. Despite ongoing claims from both sides denying the targeting of civilians, thousands—mostly Ukrainians—have lost their lives since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
The latest wave of drone assaults highlights the relentless nature of the war and underscores Ukraine’s plea for increased international pressure and defensive support to counter Russia’s escalating attacks.
